Convection in a spherical shell and supergranulation

Michel Rieutord, Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees, Toulouse

In this short talk I will present a model of the Sun's supergranulation
(i.e. the velocity pattern which covers the Sun and that has a typical scale
of 36,000km). This model is based on the properties of thermal convection at
constant heat flux within a magnetic field. I will explain its basic
features, which have been described in the simple set-up of an infinite
horizontal fluid layer by Rincon and Rieutord 2003.
